EL TUCUCHE MOUNTAIN VIA HOBAL TRACE
(Northern Range, Trinidad)
Best time for this hike: January - August
Welcome to the second tallest mountain of Trinidad and Tobago where she stands at 3,072 feet (917 meters). On a good day, beautiful vistas can be seen from the summit, from Las Cuevas Bay to the Southern Range. Peaceful and lovely this here summit.
This hike is widely regarded as one of the toughest leg one can take to get to the summit of El Tucuche. The rating of this trek is (8) strenuous.
From the very start of this hike is uphill until we eventually reach to a flat area where we can breathe easily for a while until more uphill patiently awaits us further ahead. At this flat plateau, beautiful views of the valley of Maracas St. Joseph are at our fingertips.
More uphill awaits us as we trek along. As we walk further along the clear trail, we will slowly be engulfed inside the pristine forest all the way upwards.
Just about (1 hour) into the walk, we will eventually come to the well-known “Devil’s Staircase” where here is the steepest part of the whole exploration. Certain parts of the uphill walk we will virtually have to trudge uphill on our knees as here is that steep. When we eventually reach to the top of the staircase, although more uphill awaits us, the gradient will of course be less steep.
When we are at the last of the trek, a bit of steep uphill again signaling that we are approaching the summit at long last. For a good hiker, this expedition should take between (1 hour 30 minutes) of easy walking all the way.
Once uphill, once the weather is good (not cloudy), beautiful vistas all around us, as well as a great view of Las Cuevas Bay is afforded to us.
We take the same route back downhill to the starting point.
