East-Central Range, Trinidad

Best time for this hike: January - August

Welcome to the tallest hill in the Central Range where Mt. Tamana is officially the home of the "Second largest colony of combination of fruit and insect eating bats in the world". Come and experience the flight of thousands and thousands of bats flying out of the cave into the darkening skies during the dusk period.

Hiking with a difference; hiking to Mt. Tamana in broad daylight and hiking back in total darkness. Rating of this is (5) moderately challenging.

Easy walking along gentle inclined bench track until we reach to the base of Mt. Tamana where uphill trekking from here will be a bit steeper (not significantly) but steady for the next 40 minutes when we would be on the summit.

25-30 minutes into the walk, we will pass the cave opening where the spectacle will come into reality as dusk sets in.

On the summit of Mt. Tamana, here is a table top where a further 20 minute trek will eventually bring us to the other side of the hill hereby affording beautiful views of the Central Plains, the Northern and Southern Ranges.

When the sun begins to set, we trek back downhill to the cave opening where as darkness begins to set in, see the beautiful spectacle begin to evolve where hundreds of thousands of bats take their exit. An experience to believe.

When it is total darkness and all the bats are out, we then experience night hiking downhill to where the vehicles are parked. Great care must be undertaken throughout this trek as there are lots of exposed tree roots along the way and also, once the terrain is slippery, great care must be undertaken throughout.

Long trousers must be worn….. No short trousers please.

Long/short sleeve tops ….Your choice.

Hiking shoes/trainers with good grips under the soles to be worn. No slippers or sandals please.

Headlight or flashlights is a MUST. If you don’t have either, provisions will be made for your safety.

Change of clothing to be left in the vehicles in the event of unexpected rains or mud along the trail.
